9 Christmas party games that will make your holiday party more fun

Nov. 06, 2026 / Holidays

Christmas parties are always a little more fun when everyone lets loose and gets a bit silly. You can have the prettiest decorations, a table full of delicious food, and your favorite Christmas songs playing in the background, but sometimes all it takes to make a gathering truly memorable is one ridiculously funny game.

I’m a big fan of activities that bring people together without requiring too much planning. And Christmas is the perfect excuse to bring out everyone’s playful side!

From hilarious guessing challenges to fast-paced team competitions, there are so many ways to get your family and friends laughing.

If you’re hosting a Christmas party this year and want to make sure nobody spends the entire evening sitting quietly on the sofa, I’ve gathered some fun ideas worth trying.

Some are perfect for a little friendly competition, while others are guaranteed to create those wonderfully chaotic moments everyone will be talking about long after the holidays.

So, before getting into these Christmas party games, grab some snacks, gather your favorite people, and get ready for a Christmas celebration filled with plenty of laughter!

Pin it for later!

9 easy Christmas games for a fun-filled holiday gathering

1. Christmas Charades

You really can’t go wrong with a good game of charades! It’s one of those activities that gets everyone involved, and the best part is watching people struggle to act out the simplest things without saying a single word.

For a Christmas version, stick to festive movies, holiday traditions, winter activities, and familiar Christmas characters. You’ll probably discover that some people are surprisingly good at acting while others are absolutely hopeless at it!

What you need: A bowl, small slips of paper, pens, and a timer.

How to play: Ask everyone to write down two or three Christmas-related words or phrases, such as decorating the Christmas tree, building a snowman, Santa Claus, or getting stuck in a chimney. Fold the papers and place them in a bowl.

Divide everyone into teams. Players take turns picking a clue and acting it out without speaking or making sounds. Their teammates have one or two minutes to guess the answer. The team with the most correct guesses wins!

2. The Gift Wrap Relay Race

If you enjoy a little friendly chaos, this one deserves a spot on your Christmas party list. It sounds simple enough, but watching everyone rush to wrap and unwrap the same box is much funnier than you’d expect.

I especially love that this game doesn’t require anyone to be particularly talented. In fact, the messier the wrapping gets, the better!

What you need: Two small boxes, wrapping paper, tape, and bows for each team.

How to play: Split everyone into two teams and give each team a box along with wrapping supplies. The first player must wrap the box completely, including taping the paper and adding a bow. Once finished, they pass it to the next person, who has to unwrap everything.

The following player wraps it again, and the next one unwraps it. Continue until everyone has had a turn. The first team to complete the challenge wins!

3. Christmas Movie Trivia Showdown

How well do your family and friends really know their Christmas movies? This game is a great way to find out!

From Home Alone and Elf to The Grinch and The Polar Express, there are so many little movie details you can turn into trivia questions. And if you have a few serious Christmas movie fans in the room, expect some very competitive discussions!

What you need: A list of 20–25 Christmas movie trivia questions, paper, and pens.

How to play: Divide everyone into small teams and read one question at a time. Give each team around 30 seconds to discuss their answer and write it down.

After every five questions, go through the correct answers and let everyone check their scores. You can also add a bonus round with more difficult questions for the movie experts. The team with the highest score at the end wins!

4. What’s in the Stocking?

This is such a simple little guessing game, but it can be surprisingly entertaining. The idea is to figure out what’s hiding inside a Christmas stocking without actually looking at it.

It’s a lovely option if you have a mix of children and adults at your gathering because everyone gets a chance to participate.

What you need: One Christmas stocking and 10–15 small objects.

How to play: Fill a stocking with different Christmas-related objects, such as a candy cane, pinecone, Christmas ornament, jingle bell, cinnamon stick, or small toy.

One person at a time gets to reach inside the stocking and feel an object without pulling it out. Give everyone about 10–15 seconds to guess what they’re touching.

Once everyone has made their guess, reveal the object and award a point to anyone who guessed correctly. Keep playing with different objects until you’ve gone through the entire stocking.

5. Christmas Movie Pictionary

Ready to discover the hidden artists in your family? Well, this game might prove that some people are better at drawing than others!

Christmas Movie Pictionary is a fun combination of creativity and friendly competition. The funniest part is usually trying to figure out what someone is drawing when their artistic skills aren’t quite cooperating.

What you need: A whiteboard or large sheets of paper, markers, a timer, and slips of paper.

How to play: Write down the names of Christmas movies, characters, or festive activities on separate slips of paper. Some examples include Home Alone, The Grinch, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and decorating a Christmas tree.

Divide everyone into teams. One player picks a slip and has 60 seconds to draw clues while their teammates try to guess the answer. No speaking, letters, or numbers allowed!

The team that guesses the most answers correctly wins. And don’t worry if the drawings look absolutely nothing like the actual movies. That’s part of the fun!

6. The Candy Cane Hunt

If you have children coming to your Christmas gathering, this is a lovely activity to add to the evening. Think of it as an Easter egg hunt, only with candy canes and a little extra Christmas magic.

Of course, adults are welcome to join too. You might be surprised by how competitive everyone becomes once the hunt begins!

What you need: A collection of candy canes or individually wrapped Christmas sweets.

How to play: Before everyone arrives, hide candy canes around your living room, dining area, or other spaces where guests can safely search.

Try to make some hiding spots easy for younger children and a little trickier for older participants. Once everything is ready, gather everyone together and announce that the hunt has officially begun!

Give everyone a few minutes to find as many candy canes as possible. The person who collects the most wins a small Christmas prize.

7. Name That Tune: Christmas Edition

There’s something about Christmas music that instantly puts everyone in a festive mood. And this game is a fun way to find out who can recognize a Christmas song after hearing just a couple of seconds!

You don’t need much preparation, and it’s especially entertaining when you have different generations playing together.

What you need: A Christmas playlist and a phone, laptop, or speaker.

How to play: Divide everyone into two or more teams. Play the first one or two seconds of a Christmas song and see which team can name it first.

You can include classics such as Jingle Bells, Last Christmas, All I Want for Christmas Is You, and Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.

For an extra challenge, play a short section from the middle of a song instead of the beginning. You could also introduce a humming round where one player has to hum a Christmas song while their teammates guess the title.

Award one point for every correct answer. The team with the most points at the end gets to call themselves the ultimate Christmas music experts!

8. The Left-Right Christmas Story Game

Looking for a Christmas game that everyone can enjoy without having to run around or remember complicated rules? This one is perfect!

It’s a wonderful choice for a family gift exchange, and the best part is that nobody knows which present they’ll end up holding when the story finishes.

What you need: Wrapped Christmas gifts and a funny Christmas story containing the words LEFT and RIGHT.

How to play: Ask everyone to sit in a circle, with each person holding a wrapped present. Choose someone to read a Christmas story aloud.

Every time the word LEFT appears, everyone passes their gift to the left. Whenever the word RIGHT is mentioned, everyone passes their gift to the right.

Keep passing the presents as the story continues. When the reader reaches the end, everyone gets to keep the gift they’re holding!

You can find printable Christmas Left-Right stories online, or write your own little festive story for an extra personal touch.

9. Christmas Scattergories

This is a great game for anyone who enjoys word challenges and thinking on their feet. It might sound like a quiet activity at first, but once the timer starts and everyone struggles to come up with unique answers, things can get pretty entertaining.

It’s also a nice change of pace if you’ve already played a few energetic games.

What you need: Paper, pens, a timer, and a list of Christmas-themed categories.

How to play: Prepare a list of festive categories, such as Christmas foods, things you find on a Christmas tree, reindeer names, Christmas movies, winter activities, and gifts you might receive.

Choose a random letter of the alphabet and give everyone two or three minutes to write down an answer for each category. Every answer must begin with the selected letter.

Once the time is up, compare everyone’s answers. Award one point for each valid answer that nobody else has written down. The person with the highest score wins!

Final thoughts

When it comes to hosting a Christmas gathering, I think it’s easy to get caught up in all the little details. We spend so much time thinking about the food, decorations, presents, and getting everything ready that we sometimes forget what makes the celebration special in the first place.

It’s the people around the table, the conversations that go on longer than expected, and those unexpected moments that make everyone laugh until their stomachs hurt.

That’s exactly why I love having a few Christmas games ready for the occasion. They give everyone something to look forward to, help guests feel more comfortable, and make the evening feel a little less like a formal gathering and a lot more like a celebration.

You don’t have to play all nine games, either. Pick two or three that suit your guests, keep a few little prizes ready, and let everyone enjoy themselves.

And remember, the goal isn’t to have the most perfectly organized Christmas party. It’s to create memories that make you smile when you think about them later.

Happy holidays, and here’s to a Christmas filled with plenty of laughter, happy moments, and maybe a little friendly competition!
